www.sufc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10418~2263732,00.html Sheffield United F.C. have made their first permanent signing of the January transfer window. Richard Batho (formerly of BIFA) has become Supporters Communication Manager and his role will be to liaise with supporters on the issues that are important to us. I think this is a reaction to the growing level of dissillusionment and apathy amongst our supporters. It will also be to try and address the falling gates at the Lane from circa 30,000 in the Prem to a mere 16,000 in recent home games. I don't think the crowds will come back until the football, direction and transparancy at the club improves. I doubt Richard's appointment will even begin the scratch the surface of what's wrong at SUFC, but I wish him all the best. SOC

Agreed with you there SOC, nowt`ll change until the football policy improves. Investment in the first team & a climb to safety is paramount & will be the only thing guaranteed to bring back the crowds.
Anything else is way down the list, but it`s an interesting appointment, not sure what can be done but nice to give the fans a say. Big lad, wonder what he`s like at the back?

Looks like he'll be keeping Peters Pies in business at Lane

Agree also SOC & Fred, but I think that the general apathy with fans is far more widespread than that just us at United, commentators are regularly stating now that the attendances on recent televised games ar somewhat lower this year.

Agree with all you have said. Big problems at the Lane to overcome. I was amused by the comment on the appointment of Richard Batho when it described him as "one of United's biggest supporters". Judging from the photo he must be the biggest!

I'd agree aparthy amongst football supporters in general is probably a reflection of the economic and social climate that the UK is currently going through. I suspect that people are prioritising their weekly spend and I know a few people that are picking and choosing games and or, not going at all. I suspect that the crowds will fall even further if the UK economy worsens and we slide into another recession. I think football clubs have forgotten who their supporters are and priced many a loyal fan out of going to see his football team on a Saturday.

From all i`ve read about Richard Batho he seems a decent and knowledgeable sort, someone who will at least put forward good ideas on behalf of the more sensible fans & stress their importance.
lets just hope the club give him serious thought.
But yes, when times are tough, luxury goes out the window, and while United are churning out more laxative then luxury, they will become less & less enticing to visit. No amount of ideas to bring in more fans or make it affordable will help unless things on the pitch improve first.
But a lesser cost to watch shite would help.
