Since the launch of the premier league, only a very, very few teams have not been relegated, of the numerous teams being relegated most have also been relegated further into league one. Think the number is 17 or 18 clubs. This is an inconsistency that never stops to amaze, why are so many plunged into more trouble, usually after a brief stay in the championship? For most clubs, promotion is the start of a downfall, with a very few exceptions. Most go down the first season after getting to the promised land, most teams build up great debts they can’t handle, and most teams offload ‘the nearly good enough players’ to the new promoted teams. Teams with big crowds are as inconsistent as those with small crowds, bigger crowds bigger debts. We are surely in a bad way at the moment, but now is the time to make use of all the cash put into the academy. The way forward is not plunging money into half decent old timers. Now we can make a change of direction, start by playing more attractive football and give the youngsters a well earned chance to show potential. Actually next season could hold a lot more excitement than the dire years after relegation from the premier league. We’ve reached the FA youth cup final for the first time, no little feat on a club like us, unmerited for decades.
Now it’s Yeovil and co., as we don’t have a devine right to be better just because we’re bigger.

Its concerning that people are getting carried away with the youth team. Yes they have done exceptional, its a tremendous achievement but the draw has been very, very kind to them. I see probably only 4/5 coming through next season, not the current 11 that is currently there. It would be too dangerous given there inexperience. Slew, Maguire, George Long and Harriott have started to trickle through - but last season we were looking at Phillip Roe and another black lad that played upfront, what happened to those? ? Its about geting the right blend together. We need some experience and get the balance right. Similar to when we had Jags/ Tongue and McCall sitting in.

The wage demands of the premier league can be an albatross round the neck (do you get wafers with `em?). If you stay up , then that`s not a problem with increased revenue through support & TV but if you go down, you struggle to pay these same wages & perhaps you have to sell your best to keep afloat.
Bolton & stoke & a few others have shown that having a decent man at the helm & purchasing enough quality to stay mid table is enough. You don`t have to go out & get world beaters, just good honest players with a touch of flair & technique.
Warnock chuffed that up badly in january of our prem season, bringing in no quality, except for a player for the future (kilgallon) with just a token couple of middle players with the technique to control a ball & pass it, we`d be sitting pretty.
Now alas, the young`uns or aged pros are our only salvation. However with McCabe wanting to sell anything that moves (that`s cresswell & hendo out then), we are stuck in limbo.
It`s no pat on the shoulder knowing others have trod the same path. We should never have gone down this road ( Triple Cliché alert!)
