United fought back for another point on the road in London; coming from behind yet again with a late John Fleck angled strike. The Blades were not at the best and the performance was not quite up to the standards Chris Arsenal fans will point to two penalty appeals in both games against us but really that is clutching and they have to much better than that to beat us. The fact they haven’t says a lot about where they are, but also where we are. Wilder had demanded; as he alluded to after the game. United had started the game well but Arsenal gradually took control and without creating too much; they got a goal after a deflected cross fell to Gabriel Martinelli who tapped home. After the break United had a few headed opportunities but the home side broke away a few times and had a few half chances but never really put the game beyond the visitors. Wilder made a number of changes to his personnel and shape and finally United had a go and got the late leveller. After this United had chances to win it and if anyone looked more likely it the end it was us.
Wilder made one change which was enforced with Mousset in for McGoldrick who was ruled out with a minor foot injury. Kieron Freeman made a rare appearance on the bench where once again there was no place for his namesake, Luke. United wore the fluorescent lime change kit evoking memories of the famous FA Cup clash played at Highbury back in 1999 when the match was replayed.
Arsenal were without Aubameyang but still had a 160 million strike force and featured Pepe, Lacazette and Ozil from the start.
The game started with United on the ball early and Lundstram’s challenge shrugged off his man but as Mousset looked to get away, Luiz did likewise out muscling the striker and the ball rolled out for a goal kick. Pepe had an effort from range that was easy for Henderson. Norwood’s late tackle on Lacazette in the middle of the park draw the ire of Mike Dean and he was given a yellow card after only four minutes.
United had a half chance as Stevens got down the left and linked with McBurnie before the ball was deflected and would not quite sit and went out for a corner.
United attacked down the left again and Stevens’ cross was headed over by the unmarked Mousset who really should have done better. The same man headed off target again not long after but was offside. Both efforts were nowhere near the goal.
Arsenal had been second best but came into it more on the quarter hour mark and Lacazette got away from Stevens and then Pepe ran away from Egan and his deep cross was steered wide from Martinelli. The same man shot wide from the angle as Arsenal started to have more of the ball. Basham and O’Connell had to be alert to deny some neat one touch intricate football. Norwood fired badly over in a rare break after the home side had been the dominant force for the middle part of the half.
United were not keeping the ball at all and both Lundstram and Norwood gave it away. Arsenal were looking to get between the wing backs and centre backs and both Pepe and Martinelli nearly got in. The theme of the Blades sitting off continued and they were caught out just before the break.
Both Lundstram and Baldock did not press and the ball was moved about and Saka got forward and unopposed sent a dangerous cross in that clipped Baldock and sent the ball spiralling away from the centre backs and MARTINELLI was able to convert from close range. There was a brief appeal from offside from the United backline but it seemed quite clear that he had come from well behind anticipated to come onto the loose ball as the defence appeared statuesque.
The second half began as the first half ended with United looking a bit sluggish and not keeping it and as the game stretched, the pace and movement of the Arsenal players started to see gaps appear. Baldock was rightly booked for a cynical foul on halfway on Saka. The game was scrappy and Lacazette nearly got in again but a timely block was made from Egan at full stretch.
A rare break saw Stevens send a dangerous cross over but McBurnie could not quite get on the end of it. Mousset’s race was run and he came off for Sharp before the hour mark. Not long after this United had a really good chance when McBurnie headed goalwards with Leno grasping thin air but Xhaka cleared away with his chest. Appeals were waved away from Dean as the ball was cleared.
Lundstram volleyed high into the Clock End before Arsenal broke at pace and Pepe went past Stevens but appeared to be on his way down before O’Connell’s challenge. Dean once again waved it away but there was the obligatory VAR check that backed up the referee’s opinion. There was some slight contact on the angle but you could argue that he was clearly looking for it.
Arsenal were now getting men over and Henderson had to field a low drive before Robinson who had just come on for Lundstram pushed Torreira over as he ran through. Lacazette curled the free kick over before departing to be replaced by Nketiah came on. He fired a long way over from his first involvement. Robinson was playing in the number 10 but then seemed to move left side for a spell as Basham departed for Besic and United changed shapes again and Robinson seemed to join McBurnie up top. United kept plugging away but the game was now in the final 10 minutes. Arsenal were sitting back more and this proved their undoing.
The three substitutes combined with Besic darting forward and playing in Robinson who floated his cross over, Sharp flicking on and FLECK came onto it on the angle and hit a volley into the ground and up and over Leno into the top corner. It was a clever, controlled finish and the Scottish midfielder ran to the nearby United fans as his teammates piled on top of him to celebrate.
After this remarkably United scented a winner. McBurnie was now winning all the loose balls and he got clobbered leading to a free kick. Flecks’s cross was cleared but then United had another chance as Robinson sent a cross over from the left and McBurnie’s shot was blocked as the ball would not quite sit down, Fleck’s effort immediately after was blocked as Arsenal were now hanging on somewhat.
Baldock’s galloping run saw Xhaka scythe him down and get rightly booked and from the whipped Norwood delivery it fell for Robinson who managed to send over a cross that dropped for Besic whose low shot was hit powerfully but straight at Leno who grasped the ball with McBurnie waiting to pounce.
The game entered three minutes of stoppage time and Arsenal pushed forward for the last time and a neat reverse ball saw them almost in on the left but Egan managed to get in the way at the expense of a corner. Mustafi’s looping header was clutched by Henderson and soon after the final whistle came. It was another hard-earned point and the Blades players came and acknowledged the fantastic travelling support in the corner before leaving the Emirates and London without defeat once again.
United – I actually thought Wilder was a bit over critical really. Sure, we were not as good as we have been but that has been the trend the last 4 or 5 games (save for maybe the first half v City and spells 2nd half v West Ham). The team does look a bit heavy legged and we sometimes forget many have played every game and we have not had the luxury of being able to rotate like some of the other teams – albeit some have played more games in Europe etc. We have put so much into things and performances that I think it is inevitable energy levels may regress. Oddly we ended the game powerfully though, so I think it mental as well as physical.
The performance was not as bad as Liverpool (granted they were fantastic) but not as good as City. Did we deserve a draw? Not sure. Maybe they shaded possession but not sure they created tons of chances and did not exactly blow us away. At times you saw the superior pace, technique and power. Thought they were night and day to the Emery team in terms of physicality and actually won a lot of the loose stuff and overpowered us a few times (not all game). It was odd though as we began the game really well. We had the first 10 minutes and Mousset had two good chances (one offside admittedly) and we played some neat stuff. They started to get more of the ball in midfield and pen us back and we started to sit off. They did not create much at all but you felt them started to play those little pockets of play and that chance may come. They missed one good one at the far stick with the volley that went wide and then started to dictate without anything clear cut being set up but I wanted half time so we could kind of reset as we were tossing away possession all the time after being decent to start. The goal was frustrating but we sat off again and the cross was not closed down. It was a bit lucky but the defence were not anticipating and lost the striker (seemed to be O’Connell) and he scored easily.
I wanted to see a big improvement in terms of us both on and off the ball but we continued to be sloppy and they started to find gaps but a poor final ball or decision meant they did not create much either. Indeed, McBurnie had the best chance of either side with the header cleared off the line. Henderson did not have much to do but you felt they may get a second as they were utilising their pace. On another day a penalty could have been given but it was very theatrical how he fell. I did have an inkling they might get one and we were still very ragged, even after the subs but started to chick more men forward. We had Egan and O’Connell in the box more than once. Eventually a ball dropped and Fleck’s superb finish got us level. After this we had 2 or 3 chances to win it and the ball did not quite drop for McBurnie and then Fleck as the United fans anticipated a potential historic victory. They got a corner at the end but after we scored, they did nothing really and as I say we looked the more likely.
So, we had the first 10-15 and the last 10 and Arsenal had more of the game in the other 60-65. They had a lot of the ball but not sure they hurt us that much. A few shots flashed wide and over but only remember Henderson saving a few easy shots other than the goal. They did have a few breaks and you worried it would be put to bed but it never happened and we stayed in the game and then got our goal. A great point. As Wilder says, not really at our best and we gave it away too much. Arsenal beat our press to easy after the first 10-15 minutes and not sure we did press enough at all actually and seemed a bit caught in two minds. They had unopposed possession for long stretches but as I say did not do much with it. I was delighted to get something. Even with their best player missing, they are still packed with talent and multi-million-pound players and have picked up in terms of desire, running and attitude under Arteta. To take something back and ensure we managed to get something from that ridiculously hard three away games is brilliant. Indeed, four points from six after the two defeats away at the best two in the league, is really impressive. I do think a few are a bit off it currently and Wilder alluded to the fact some are stalling on contract offers. Once again, love his honesty in basically saying, you have been great but you have got here because of him/us and how we play and may not have tons of offers from others. If it Fleck and Lundstram, the two he is referring to then I think teams would look at Fleck but the latter on current form.
We now have our toughest game left of the season against City. After another energy sapping game, be a tough one and half wished they had won before they played us as they will want to respond. They have some phenomenal players in De Bruyne, Silva x 2, Aguero, Sterling etc and can destroy teams as Villa saw last week. We have to stay in the game early and cannot be too hung ho as they will pick you off but I hope it would be another really good night under the lights at the Lane. We need to improve on the last three performances but if we can and with their defence you never know. After this we can reset and hopefully get 2 or 3 bodies in to give some strength in depth to cover for when a few are out of form as they are at the moment. I do believe we need some fresh legs to come in. We then have a run of 4 or 5 games where there are not only points to be hard, but a chance to get back to the performance levels we set before and also the chance for a few weeks off. Indeed, after City, we only have two games in around four weeks if you look at the Cup game where he may rest most and the winter break.
Ratings:
Henderson 7/10 – Actually did not have much to do. Comfortably saved a few low shots but held them well and caught that headed at the end that was vital. The goal it was hard as he was never going to get to it after the deflection and really his defence has to react there. His kicking was poor once again as he kicked at least two out.
Baldock 7/10 – Thought he was up and down, as much of the team was yesterday. I do not think Lundstram helped him and Saka was coming down that side and causing problems. However, there were crosses and openings coming down both sides. He did not get forward quite as much but as I say that was as much down the pace on the flank. He did have one great run near the end when he showed his desire to draw the foul and keep the momentum up.
Stevens 7.5/10 – Seen mixed reviews on him from the game. BBC gave him man of the match. Others said he was poor. I thought he was closer to good than poor. Defensively he got caught a few times as they had the one early chance when he was ball watching. I also thought a few times he was a bit safe when coming forward. This was odd as the start of the game and the end of the game; he was bounding forward and really involved early and then at the end. I felt he was one of our main threats when he got the ball and put some really good balls in – the one for Mousset and the one for McBurnie driven across in the second half.
Basham 7/10 – Another really steady performance. He was not maybe as influential going forward in this game and had to sit more but he was good defensively and made some good blocks and interceptions. Had a really good season so far and a strong contender for player of the season. To watch him look comfortable against international superstars is a real surprise but a pleasant one.
O’Connell 7/10 – Decent with no massive errors outside of ball watching on the goal. As with the whole defence/centre backs felt at times they struggled a bit with the movement and pace but not sure they were helped by the forward/midfielders which meant the ball kept coming back. I felt the defence kicked it long too much. On the goal maybe he could have reacted a bit quicker (so could Egan). I thought they were tighter second half and managed to read things in terms of runs better.
Egan 7/10 – See above. He was ok defensively in the sense against some really quick forwards were up against him. He sat back and tried to play deep to counter against this. Did make a few good interceptions. He was a bit poor with the ball and went long too much. Second half recall a few times he stepped in and read things really well.
Norwood 6.5/10 – Thought he was sloppy with the ball a few times today and did not dictate like he can do. I know that when we are away, we see less of the ball and this was evident today. His role diminishes as he is not a tackler/presser and then if he is not on the ball, games can pass him by a bit. To his credit, he kept plugging away and started to see a bit more of it second half. His set plays were decent today and we had some headed chances/half chances. I think that is why he was left on instead of Basham who was sacrificed.
Lundstram 4/10 – Sadly continued his poor performances. I was surprised he started after his drop offs but he started ok with a muscular challenge to set us forward but after this not sure he did much. Way too safe on the ball coming back and sideward. He was sloppy with it too and too many misplaced balls. However, I was more concerned at his lack of pressing and help down the right side. They caused us problems and twice on the goal in the build up he sat off. Looked knackered very early. I don’t want to scapegoat him but he has been really poor for 5 or 6 games now and needs to be taken out of the team. We improved a lot more again when Besic came on.
Fleck 7.5/10 – Our best midfielder again. This seems to be the case most weeks. First half, he tried to drive forward and get on the ball early but then tried to play the perfect pass a few times. He had a spell as the whole team did were it was a bit hot potato and we started giving it away. We also sat off too much. As the game went on, he started to get a foothold more and he was involved in some of the openings we had and then scored a superb goal. His goalscoring form is another real surprise and he has really improved his finishing but the new formation means he can get in the box more – Duffy was this man most far forward the last few years – so Fleck had to sit. After this he nearly got another as his shot was blocked. When he gets it and dribbles and commits men, he gives us a totally different dimension and something few others can do.
McBurnie 7/10 – Started the game quietly and felt they got to the ball more and he was not really in it first half. He was not winning challenges and it came back too much. Second half much improved. He had a header off the line, nearly got on the end of the Stevens cross and another header saved when he maybe should have done better. After this he then started winning flicks, getting in front of his man and being a real nuisance. We won ball and free kicks just from his desire and he ended the game really well. Thought he was going to score when the ball dropped to him near the end. It was similar to the Man Utd goal but the ball would not quite drop and was blocked.
Mousset 4/10 – He was a real threat last week and deserved his start but today he was totally ineffective. His header early on set the scene. He really should have done much better. He then missed another and clearly heading is not his strong point! Aside from this he had one run early where Luiz shrugged him off and I felt he struggled most of the game. He did not get in front of his man or hold it up. Also, when we put it forward did not quite see the bursting desire we have in other games. Did not even last an hour. Needs to ensure he is much more consistent. Not scored for a while now and his form is up and down. A real talent but he needs to get fitter and apply himself every game or will be used more as an impact sub.
Subs –
Sharp 7/10 – He got a fair amount of time today. I think Wilder wanted the Arsenal centre backs occupied more and so it proved. He actually lost the first few challenges but then won a few and crucially won the header that led to the goal. He did put himself about and at least showed some hunger. Not sure he has the pace and mobility to play full games at this level but think he still may have his uses this second part of the season.
Robinson – Weird as at times he continued to frustrate with his lack of running/pressing (just stood around), ‘neshing’ tackles and the gave away the free kick. I thought up to the goal he looked woeful but then he puts a cross over and we score; he then is involved in two or three other chances. He made one great tackle on the left, and showed a new desire in all aspects of his play. He clearly is a confidence player as we saw the shift after the goal. Seems a cracking lad and his face on the goal shows how much he cares but not sure he is quite up to this level. He needs to show the effort and attitude in the last 5 minutes from the off when he comes off.
Besic – I was crying out for him to come on, even at half time to help Baldock and give him some protection but it did not happen. When he did come on, we had 15 minutes left and he did well on the goal with a driving run, he gave us more energy and nearly scored with a low shot. He definitely gave us some more legs and helped us get more ball. Deserves a start. I know he is not really a right sided player which is traditionally where Lundstram plays in the three but I think I would play him v City in the week.
Manager Wilder 7.5/10 – His after-match interview was another eye opener as he critiqued a draw at Arsenal! He is right though in the sense that we have played better and the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes were great but in between we were poor, both on and off the ball. Arsenal were not much better but did show better ball retention and quality while looking a bit clueless in the final third. I think if we had played like we did at Spurs, or at City, then we would have won the game. Still, he made changes and the formation was moved around and all three subs were involved in the goal. He seems a bit frustrated with a few players (re contracts) and will be ruthless if he has to be. I like this message as he showed with Duffy, that he won’t be held to ransom.
Arsenal – To say we were average and poor for long spells (albeit started and ended well) I thought they would have beaten us and been better. They did not. They played a few bits of neat football and actually competed so much harder than the game at the Lane. They have some fantastic players and we saw glimpses of this with Ozil, Pepe and also Lacazette. They had all the flicks and tricks but actually in the final third not sure they exposed us too much. I am not sure they really tested Henderson much but would have just thought in a scrappy game devoid of much quality, that they would just do enough to get a win. They kind of were caught between going for a second and holding what they had. They did not really do either. In the end they did not do enough to put the game to bed. It was not like they had lots of chances or really tried properly to go for the second and we got the leveller and then Arsenal were hanging on a bit at the end as the fragile confidence maybe came back.
Arsenal fans will point to two penalty appeals in both games against us but really that is clutching and they have to much better than that to beat us. The fact they haven’t says a lot about where they are, but also where we are.
They have spent 137 million since the end of last season (19/20). They spent 72 million last season (18/19). Then 138 million (17/18) – mainly on the two strikers! 101 million the year before (16/17). Nearly every single player is still there. A squad that has cost 350 million to assemble over the last 4 or 5 years. 350 MILLION and they are half way up the league and not even as good as us at the moment! It is mind blowing stuff compared to us and that is without even looking at the respective wages. Of course I am jealous we cannot spend this kind of money and search for this kind of quality but also shows chucking money at it does not always work – they had a legendary manager in Wenger for half that spell too so it’s not just Emery but from top down that mistakes have been made.
When Arteta is moaning about the possible penalty and how they should have won, he maybe needs to look at the above really. As an aside, I thought his interview was a touch embarrassing. Saying we did not have any chances second half when we had two clear-ish McBurnie efforts (one off the line) and several other blocks, the late Besic shot and the goal. They had a free kick go over and Henderson fielded one. We actually had more shot on target and equal amount over the game (shots on goal) so renders his words illogical. Of course, they had more of the ball but they will being Arsenal and the home team. They could have wrapped things up but it was not as if Henderson was making save after save and in the end they sat back.
He has improved them and they have some real quality that can hurt any team but they are light years away from Liverpool and City for me. The fact I felt we could go there and get a result and we did that and could play much better, kind of shows how far they have to go also. They need some genuine steel in midfield and some leaders. For all the talent and pace up the top, the defence and midfield lacks bite and organisation and they are still susceptible in these areas. I think he will gradually evolve the and the one positive is the players they have brought in recently on the whole are young players. It is ironic that Saka and Marinelli (granted he was bought for 6 million from Brazil) are the ones I would be most excited about as an Arsenal fan.
As for this season, sure they will push up and go above us but not sure they will make the top 6. I think the likes of Man Utd, Spurs, Chelsea and even Wolves are stronger at the moment and those three bigger clubs are in transition also so that shows as much as Arsenal will improve – although will have too spend another 100 million or so which is ridiculous but sums up problems with the Premier League; the others will get better too. Liverpool are a young team and City will spend more to add to the great spine they have so the best I think Arsenal can hope for us to try and get 3rd/4th place in the next 4 or 5 years which for a club like Arsenal is not really good enough
Opponent Man of the Match – I thought the two young lads were good. Martinelli scored and was lively and then the best player was Saka. He played wide left (left back but not his true position really either in the game – as got forward a lot or in terms of where he normally plays which is more left wing in terms of him starting there) and really impressed. Quick, good on the ball and always wanting to get forward and make things happen. Lacazette showed bits and pieces with his hold up and running and Ozil, as much as he gets criticised, played some of the best passes on the field for both teams. Pepe had a few powerful runs but he faded a bit second half as did a few of their flair players. Maitland Niles is another that might not get the rave reviews but is decent although got forced back near the end. I don’t rate Luiz but was ok today.
Opponent Weak link – Not sure really. They were a lot of average performances (both teams can say that) but Xhaka is really a hatchet man who seems very slow and just brings people down. He is not particularly clever or cute on the ball. Mustafi struggled with McBurnie towards the end of the game and started to lose the battle and allowed us to get higher up the field and lost him three times on corners for headers which all could have gone in. Torriera was a bit mixed. He seemed to have a good spell middle of the game but then Fleck ran off him a few times towards the end and crucially seemed to lose him on the goal. Interesting Nketiah came on when he has barely been used at Leeds and the fans seem to like him and want him to get a chance judging by the cheers but that is the same with any of the local lads.
Referee/Officials/VAR – A lot of talk about the penalty incident and I will say some will have given it. The lad goes down before the challenge even comes and the slow motion makes it seem worse than it is – O’Connell barely even touches him. I think it was the right decision. I think Mike Dean is one of the better refs for noticing stuff like this and glad he was in charge. I think some would have given it and then VAR would not have overturned it though being honest. They kind of went with Dean as he was right next to it. Winds me up how Ian Wright said why do we have VAR. Sorry but you could not be more wrong. This was not a case of clear and obvious error. Mike Dean felt it was not a penalty and was right next to it. If VAR overturns it, that is only because another referee in a studio feels it was a penalty. To me that defeats the object of it. You are basically not letting a referee ref the game. That is one of the problems with it. I bet the refs on the day are as frustrated with it all as us the fans. It is undermining them completely. As I say, if another man overturns that, then Dean may as well not be on the pitch as they are saying his opinion is worthless.
He is a strange character Dean with all his theatrics of how he plays on, his weird hand signals and likes to be noticed but you know what in both games with Arsenal and the games I have seen him this season generally, he has been one of the best. His theatrics and the way he conduct himself actually deflects from the fact he is a very good referee. He has improved massively over the years. He also had a bit of humour at times (shown again at the match yesterday with his ‘It’s his b*****s!’ as the United physio ran on when McBurnie clutched his crown jewels.
I like the fact Dean does not fall for the diving and theatrics and waves people on. The yellows today were all right. Norwood was early and I thought it was a bit harsh but watched back and it is poor even if it the fourth minutes. Baldock had done a few before he got booked so got his money’s worth and then Xhaka pulled George down and was carded.
Nice to see a goal (two if you count the Arsenal one) where no VAR would even be thought about. Ours there was nothing I could think of that would see it disallowed. This is the first goal we have scored for a while where I thought that!
Crowd/Atmosphere etc – My second visit to the Emirates. My mate went for the first time. It is fantastic and huge inside and looks very impressive but kind of spoilt after going to the new Tottenham ground just before Xmas. My mate summed it up. The Arsenal ground is amazing but the Spurs one hold 2,000 more (62,000 – 60,000) and of course is more modern – the Arsenal ground has been open now for 14 years which took me by surprise. I went the first season in 2006 and even in that time it really does not have the same feel/grandeur. The outside looks amazing and maybe the best in the country with the signage/visuals with the walk way around as you go up the raised bridge or steps depending how you enter. The cannons outside the club shop near the roundabout as you approach from the Holloway Road or the giant Arsenal letters, all add to the feeling of a massive ground/club. The club shop is huge and might be the biggest I have ever been in (they have another on the other side too). It does feel very touristy though and you get the sense of a lot of fans visiting for the first time from overseas. A lot leave early as well and you have that big Club Arsenal section just for VIPS (middle section). In the ground, it is not as steep as the new Spurs ground and the view we have is nowhere near as good as the rake is shallow. The far end you struggle to see what is going on and hard to gauge the depth perception and how close players are to the goal!
Inside the concourse is quite basic but roomy (well if some moved to the sides where there were bars that no one was at and lots of room to stand and watch the early game on TV) but the toilets were awful. They did not have enough urinals/troughs and thus it became a real log jam getting in and out. Did have Camden ales which was good but again not quite Beavertown at Spurs! My personal preference though that maybe. I did not think the atmosphere was great and it fairly quiet. Fans come in really late and leave really early too. The goal was a bit muted when they scored (hardly a deafening roar) but of course ours felt different as it was right at our end and you got a great view of it going in and the celebrations after! The United fans were in good voice if a bit frustrated, we never fully going but then a great ending and we nearly won it – god knows that the away end would have been like if we did!
Pre game we actually went to South London just because we fancied something different. Went to Clapham Common and had breakfast and a few beers round Clapham before heading up to the Emirates. Had a look at the old ground the frontage still there on the old main stand before we had a wander round the new ground and then got in around 2.30pm for a quick pint before the match.
Took an age to get away after the game but you then it is Bramall Lane x 2 in terms of numbers and the large queues at tubes meant we decided to find a pub but to no avail for a while as every pub in the vicinity asked for a home ticket/membership/season card. We found one – the Library for a quick one and then waited for the crowds to clear before heading to Camden to the Camden Tavern and the Worlds End for a few beers before heading for the 8pm ish train (delayed a bit) and back to Sheffield with a few more beers on the journey.
