2019/20 SUFC SEASON REVIEW / SCHOOL REPORT
Final Part
Match Report Ratings
Interestingly, I did a spreadsheet that shows the marks for all the players from my reports -so every game took the player marks and then averages them out by number of games/ratings given – it may not totally marry up with above’s school grades but thought it was interesting. I intentionally did this after but maybe I should have done it before I did my grades and maybe some of the strikers should drop to B- and C+/C etc but hey ho, I went more with instinct for the grades and the season as a whole rather than breaking down every game – sometimes the odd game Bash had a nightmare he would be like a 4/5 and that takes it down if he is getting a lot of 7.5’s etc. McBurnie’s is a bit lower than I would have thought but shows his inconsistency where as no surprise it had the defence right at the top with only Fleck breaking the top marks with the rest all defenders. Lundstram and Mousset maybe a bit higher than I thought but early season form was very good. Berge’s quite average run of games shows up as the 3 or 4 he played well in did not really overcome the 7 or 8 he was average to poor.
Wilder’s 7 seems very harsh!!! However, some of the cup games/lockdowns brought it right down.
So below is what the numbers came out in terms of averages and rankings in the team…..maybe makes a mockery of my opinions above or my ratings are nonsense! Let you decide!

Deadbat’s Awards for 2019/20
Player of the Season: Chris Basham (Last season - Enda Stevens)
Runner up: John Fleck (Last season - Billy Sharp)
Third: Jack O’Connell (Last season - Chris Basham)
Honourable mention: George Baldock, John Egan, Dean Henderson
Moment of the Season: Going 2-0 up v Man Utd. McGoldrick’s goals v Chelsea were fantastic as was that performance but got to pick a game we were at. I was not at Bournemouth for the Sharp moment but wanted to pick something when we had become more stablished and the whole country was taking notice. We had some great wins and moments but for me when Mousset swept in the second for Man Utd (know we did not hang on). We were outclassing and outplaying maybe the biggest club in world football and at that moment were top 5 and ahead of many big clubs. It was then that I think we realised how good we had become.
The away game at Chelsea runs it close. It was the first time we had gone to a big team and showed we belonged and got something. The noise of ‘Shoreham Boys we are here!’ reverberating around Stamford Bridge after we made it 2-2 late on was spine tingling and felt so good as we came out onto the Kings Road and could celebrate, we had deservedly got a draw with a superb fight back at a big team. This was not the cup – this was the Premier League.
Goal of the Season: Lundstram 2nd v Burnley. Sharp’s was great in the sense it showed we had arrived but not a classic goal. I loved the Fleck one v Villa after the Basham flick and Lundstram ball but all three against Burnley I loved. I think the second was a superb team move too. Shame that it did not have a better finish (shanked in the end) but the multi pass team move at Spurs deserved a mention.
Best individual display: Egan away v Everton. Lots to choose from. McGoldrick was fantastic v Chelsea and McBurnie v Spurts the same and Bash had some superb showings but I recall Egan being absolutely immense away at Everton. He literally would not let them pass that day.
Best performance of the season: Burnley home. That day we absolutely destroyed a really good side. It just edges out Chelsea and Spurs for the football we played even though those two showed a different side (organisation and shape) but Burnley in that first half it was sublime and probably the best football many had seen in their lifetime and certainly going back to the early 1970’s.
Worst performance of the season: Newcastle away. Not much before the lockdown but after this a few shockers. We were well beaten at Man Utd and Leicester and lacklustre v Everton/Villa but against a poor Newcastle side we were abysmal. So many players were out of sorts, we got a man sent off and some of the defending was so unlike us.
Pass of the season: Norwood v Crystal Palace. The long diagonal one to Norwood that went the whole width of the field. Fantastic and similar to some of the ones we saw last season from him. Fleck’s pass to Mousset for the goal and Lundstram’s cross to Sharp were very good too and led to goals.
Save of the season: Dean Henderson v Norwich. You can make a case for a number of great saves he made but two saves, ironically both versus Norwich stand out. The one at home where he made a kind of double save was remarkable but the first was more regular and the second although had to be saved just hit him. The best save was the one at Carrow Road that preserved
Most improved player: Chris Basham. I had Lundstram to win this but he fell away after Xmas but Lunny deserves plaudits from being nowhere near the team to a key man for a few months and scoring sensation too! However, Basham has just got better and better through the leagues. He has been even better in the Premier League than the Championship and was even better in the Championship than League One. What a journey.
Unsung hero: George Baldock. Really still does not get the credit he deserves. Every week he shows such desire almost to the point of being too angry but he has been fantastically committed and consistent. He could have got most improved player but sometimes does not get the credit his performances deserve. He has rarely been got the better of by some top-level talent showing his rise.
Biggest disappointment (player): Callum Robinson. Be too easy to pick Ravel Morrison but he was really a bit of a punt and actually many would have been more surprised if it did come off. Luke Freeman had a few injuries and never really was a regular but did ok at times. Callum Robinson cost 7 million and after a decent pre-season never really convinced. I can only really recall the first half at Bournemouth and second half v Chelsea where he did quite well. The rest of the time he looked like he was out of his depth and eventually was out of the team and went to West Brom – even here he was not a regular and it seems he is not quite the player we thought he would be.
Best opponent (player) v United: Vardy / De Bruyne / Mane. We have seen some more unheralded players do well at times v United but hard not to go away from the bigger name players. Felt that Traore was damn near unplayable at Molineux but we dealt with well at the Lane. Martial scored a hat trick against us at Old Trafford but was quiet in the return. Van Dijk was immense but will go for a forward player I think and hard to split three. Vardy actually was brilliant in both games and his non-stop running was something else. I thought Mane was really good in both games. He may have missed a few / scored one but his pace/skill and power saw our much-vaunted defence even struggle. De Bruyne was superb in the away game at City as he assisted/scored and showed such quality and then the assist he made with the beautiful pass to Aguero at the Lane. Those two were the stand outs I felt.
Worst opponent (player) v United: Phil Jones (Man Utd). Matt Lowton had a bit of a mare at the Lane as did Aurier in both games for Spurs but Jones was abysmal in that first half and if he stayed on, I am confident we would have won that game.
Signing of the season: Dean Henderson. I have cheated a bit but he was a signing (albeit on loan again) and was excellent in goal yet again and a key art of our success. Osborn was maybe my second pick here and Robinson did ok to say they were not really seen as main signings. McBurnie did well at times as did Mousset to start the season but the rest the jury is out or has voted. The lads Retsos and Zivkovic did not make much of an impact. Berge and Freeman still yet to fully convince and be regular 90-minute players and consistent enough.
Thing I liked most about the Premier League: My son will say the Panini sticker album! I enjoyed that too. I also liked we could watch every game on TV nearly and lots of coverage but for me it was just being relevant again. Bit hypocritical as I would say the Championship is maybe more exciting but you have to still push to be in the best league. My club was being talked about and mostly praised. I loved the fact that wherever you turned you saw a Blades badge – we were on TV all the time, interviews, highlights, discussion. The wall to wall coverage can be nauseating and they forget there are 92 clubs but when you are one of the most talked about 20 then you of course enjoy it.
Thing I hate the most about the Premier League: Lots of contenders here – the money at the top and the closed shop type situation, the fact that the focus is so much on the big clubs, lazy punditry, lazy fans, mostly of top teams, who never go to games but do Youtube videos of their teams, VAR, the daft kick off times but I think one think that edges it for me is the pathetic play acting of the players. Most weeks we would see players falling to the floor under little contact. The likes of Richarlison, Zaha, Maddison, Grealish were chief culprits but loads more did it. The slightest touch and down they went and you know what invariably the refs gave it. Pathetic.

See you next season…hopefully?!
