What terribly sad news another one of my early heroes has passed away.
Len was a classy right back when i first saw Sheffield United at the Lane, he went on to give us great service and it was a sad moment when he went off to Chesterfield, which at that time seemed like the rest home for ex United players.
Len was a superb player, got a few under 23 caps for England but like Woody was strangely neglected for the full England team, not many players got the better of Len.
i was there when he scored his long ranger in a 7-0 win over ipswich, and i seem to recall his last goal was in a game against Blackburn in some sort of cup game?... But his job was to stop the opposition attackers and help create chances for us , playing neatly with the likes of Woody and TC
And what a modest man he was, i chatted with him in a pub in chesterfield around 1980, i got up the courage to tell him he was class and one of my favourite players.... he said in reply summat like "think you`ve got me mixed up with someone else, i were just a clogger"
he wasn`t a clogger of course but a champion player, a lovely man and a marvelous Blade, born and bred in Sheffield,. over 500 games for United and lots of great memories.
Sorry to see you go Len. Thanks lots for all you gave us.
