Academy / Development side
A huge thanks to @goodpinch (twitter handle) for his help in some of this section and as always has helped me a fair bit to fill in the gaps etc. Indeed, a good section of below was taken from @goodpinch who gave me lots of details on the competitions, form and players! He gave me all the details on competitions, how the teams fared at each age group and all the player stats. Fantasitc research!
Also, the brilliant roster that @ball_sup completes and updates. Most of the factual stuff comes from them- the opinions on players are from myself! However, I would not have been able to do the below without their help!
The sides a U23 and u18 level have been very successful in what they have done in terms of results, performances and player production up the age groups if you like. Granted we would prefer to be playing better teams at this level but can only beat what you are up against and to be top of both age groups is quite an achievement. We have had long unbeaten runs at both levels too. This is all against a backdrop of a number of players going on loan or being involved in the first team. The net effect is the u18’s move up to the u23’s and this makes the results even more incredible. Big credit to the coaches and the players. Yes, it is often seen as about preparing players and trying to find 1st team talent but even at the big clubs not everyone breaks through. If you get one player from a squad/age group to be a regular eventually at first team level then you have done well. We of course have to compete with a number of clubs who have better set ups and facilities.
Overcoming these inferior facilities and not being a Grade 1 Academy is going to be a challenge but as Lester and Geary have pointed out the coaching quality will remain high throughout the levels even if we don’t have the best pitches/changing rooms and gymnasiums/hydrotherapy etc.
The fact the Academy is Category B when most at this level and some lower is Category A means we are not going to get the top talent and teams like Burnley and Leeds are both now Category A. However, with the reputation of the club’s production and the coaches there present hopefully if we can move into the next level, we can produce top level players again. That has to be way forward. Despite some feeling we have not had as many come through in recent years, we do not realise how well we did to produce Maguire, Walker, Brooks, Calvert Lewin, Ramsdale etc. Jebbison, Gordon, Seriki have all played first team games for players that are very young and all came through the ranks even if signed from other academies. I saw a stat after the Bournemouth game that saw we had gone 94 games where we had a player who came through the academy (so they count Sharp/Ramsdale even though they left and came back) either starting or coming off the bench and this game saw this run ended. That is still quite a stat and wonder how many other teams could have such a ‘run.’ There are clearly things working well but it is just frustrating we cannot make that next step in terms of level they play at and the facilities. This would help us attract even more talent.
Derek Geary ran the u18’s for a few years and then when Lester was elevated to the first team was named head of the academy operations but despite this different overseeing role, he seemed to be still managing/coaching the u18’s? I am assuming that is not the plan longer term but not heard of a new u18 coach being appointed? The game I saw Geary was very much still running things on the touchline.
At the U23 level since Heckingbottom has moved on, United named Michael Collins as the coach at this level. Collins had a brief spell as Bradford manager and seems to have hit the ground running with results and performance. It is probably forgotten about as we have not seen him involved day to day or heard from him but we appointed Adie Boothroyd as a coach/mentor and consultant. His last job in league football he was sacked by Northampton and had struggled to get results out of a talented England U21 side. However, Lester recently said this about Boothroyd, Lester added: "He's a soundboard for Del because he's had those top managerial positions. He's a soundboard for Micky because he's done that level with England. He sits with staff and sees where they want to go and what they want to be. He sits with players; he coaches in the morning and assists Micky in the afternoon with the sessions. He does a bit of everything. He's been a busy man. He loves it and he's impressed with our academy. To be fair, a lot of people are when they come and see how we work."
Some of the u18’s/u23’s interchange – many are at different points buts it’s not uncommon for players to feature for both too and of course some have been around the first team. We have not used many senior players as overage players for the u23’s but not many teams too. I recall Stevens playing in a game and also Guedioura and Norrington Davies featuring too for a game. Also featuring were Jebbison and Ndiaye but have not included any what I would term ‘first team pool’ players in the section below.

Season summaries
The Blades continued to run an Elite Player Performance Plan Category 2 academy and therefore its younger pros and scholars once again competed at both U23 and U18 age categories in the Premier League's Professional Development League. This season there were 17 clubs with Category 2 academies, split into two regional sections - North and South. The Blades were placed in the North section and played the other seven teams in their section home and away, plus the nine teams in the South section once - a total of 23 league games. The two teams finishing highest in the two sections qualified for the playoffs to determine the national champions. The U23s made a return to the Premier League Cup, a competition mainly for those Category 1 clubs who aren’t playing in UEFA youth competitions but with a number of invited non-Category 1 clubs to make up the numbers. As for the U18s, alongside the 70th annual FA Youth Cup, they also took part in the inaugural League Cup.
Competitions
U23 Professional Development League (“U23PDL”)
The Blades set about defending their title with a very good return of six wins and two draws from the opening ten games before Heckingbottom moved into his first team role. Micky Collins took temporary charge for the next couple of games which saw a win and a defeat before he was given the role permanently. In the remaining games of the season, the Blades took 25 of a possible 33 points to win the North title for a successive season and qualify for the national playoffs. The Blades had home advantage in the semi final and decided to play South runners-up, Bristol City, at the York Community Stadium. Unfortunately Bristol City won the tie 1-0 with an 89th minute goal, ending the Blades season.
Premier League Cup (“PLC”)
The U23s were placed in a group with two category 1 academies, Burnley and Everton, together with category 2 newcomers, Peterborough United. Playing each opponent home and away, the Blades found themselves bottom of the group with just one win from the first four games. However, victories in the final two games was enough to see qualification to the knockout stages. The round of 16 handed the Blades an away trip to face Derby County at Loughborough University Stadium. Despite the problems facing the Rams, their U23 side were still formidable opponents, competing in the top flight of the category 1 academy league system. The Blades gave it a good go though, taking them to extra time before succumbing to a 4-3 defeat and ending their campaign.
U18 Professional Development League (“U18PDL”)
The team continued the good form which had seen an unbeaten run of nine league games at the end of the previous season when the team finished just outside of the playoffs. Despite remaining unbeaten during the first ten games, seven ended all square and the team found themselves behind the frontrunners. But then the Blades went on an incredible run, winning twelve of their remaining thirteen games to win the North league title for the first time since 2017 and qualify for the national playoffs. The other game in that run was drawn, annoyingly due to an opposition equaliser deep into injury time! An incredible unbeaten league season. The Blades had home advantage in the playoff semi final and decided to play South runners-up, Colchester United, at Bramall Lane. Despite being 1-0 down at half time the Blades turned it on to win 5-1 and set up a final against South champions, Charlton Athletic. Again, the Blades had home advantage in the final which was played at Shirecliffe, and again, they were 1-0 down at half time and turned it around this time to win 2-1 and take the national championship, also for the first time since 2017.s I say quite a number moved between u16-u18-u23 action so a number are interchangeable.
FA Youth Cup (“FAYC”)
The Blades entered the competition at the third round stage and Bramall Lane saw a tie against fellow category two academy, Millwall. After 90 minutes and, subsequently, 120 couldn’t find a winner, the match went to penalties, Cal Hiddleston was the hero, keeping three out in a 6-5 victory. The fourth round saw a tough trip to Goodison Park against category 1 academy, Everton. Despite a brave performance including a late goal from Sai Sachdev, the Blades went out 2-1. U18 Professional
Development League Cup (“U18PDLC”)
The U18s were placed in a group with Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Peterborough United. Playing each opponent just once, the Blades struggled and finally crashed out of the competition, finishing bottom of the group with just a solitary point.

Player Summaries
For each of the five competitions @goodpinch has provided incredible research so big thanks to him:
● Apps (appearances - set out as starting appearances, appearances from the bench and non-appearances as an unused sub
● Mins (minutes played based on 90 minute games - it’s often impossible to gather any added time played but I do have all substitution times)
● Gls (goals scored) Over age The Premier League allows up to three outfield players and the keeper to be over age in U23PDL and PLC games. It allows U19 keepers to play in the U18PDL and U18PDLC although the Blades didn’t have any this season.
The FA doesn’t allow over age players in the FA Youth Cup. Three over age players were used, all in the U23PDL:
Jake Eastwood - Goal U23PDL: Apps 1-0-0 Mins 90 Gls 0
Adlène Guedioura - Midfield U23PDL: Apps 1-0-0 Mins 61 Gls 0
Enda Stevens - Defence U23PDL 1-0-0 Mins 45 Gls 0
Trialists
The Premier League allows trialists in the U23PDL, PLC, U18PDL and U18PDLC. The Blades named seven trialists during the season. Jili Buyabu, Miguel Freckleton and Joseph Starbuck were all subsequently signed.
The trialists not taken on, so far were:
Eligijus Dapkus - Attack Playing for Frenford U18 in Eastern Junior Alliance. U18PDL: Apps 0-0-1 Mins 0 Gls 0
Lewis Earl - Defence Playing for Hyde United in National North. U23PDL: Apps 1-0-0 Mins 90 Gls 0 Sharman Nandi - Midfield No details of who he was playing for. U18PDL: Apps 1-0-0 Mins 76 Gls 0
Lynford Sackey - Defence Playing for Reading U23 in Premier League 2 Group 2. U23PDL: Apps 1-1-0 Mins 118 Gls 0
U23 and U22 Age Group
The EFL allowed Championship clubs to name a squad of up to 25 players who were either over 21 or on loan. Clubs were allowed to name an unlimited number of their own under 21 players. During the season there were five Blades players who were too old for the u21 squad but qualified for both the U23PDL and PLC.
Three didn’t make any appearances:
● Sander Berge
● Rhys Norrington-Davies
● Aaron Ramsdale, who transferred to Arsenal on 20th August.
Two did make appearances:
Regan Slater - Midfield Made the bench at both Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup and Preston North End in the EFL Championship. Transferred to Hull City on 27th January.
Tyler Smith - Attack Started against Carlisle United in the EFL Cup. Transferred to Hull City on 27th August.
Morgan Gibbs-White (on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers) also qualified for both the U23PDL and PLC but made no appearances.
EFL Championship U21 Squad
During the course of the season, 52 players were named in the U21 squad, published by the EFL. Three of those players made no development appearances.
Jaydon Bogle was part of the first team squad and so not considered part of the academy squad.
Harry Boyes (Solihull Moors) and Ismaili Coulibaly (K Beerschot VA) spent the whole season on loan away from the Blades.
There were 23 other players in the U21, U20 and U19 age groups, all of whom made development appearances for the Blade
U23 Loaned out players – ended season or spent time with other clubs during the season
Amissah, Jordan
Contract: End of 22-23 / Aged 20
U23PDL: Apps: 8-0-4 Mins 720 Gls 0 PLC: Apps 2-0-2 Mins 180 Gls 0
Notes: Loaned to Spennymoor Town.
Had been at Borussia Dortmund and Schalke as a youngster -huge goalkeeper. He has German citizenship I believe but is Ghanaian. Hard as a keeper as we have had Dewhurst and Eastwood (when not on loan). Whenever I have seen him, he looks huge but always seems to have a mistake in him. Maybe harsh as I only see snippets but United obviously have a lot of faith in him as gave him a fairly long contract. Had a loan at Guiseley and then Spennymoor Town this season and got sent off for retaliating (think Blackman at Brentford with Ryan Woods!) in one game! He did save a few penalties though too! Think he faced three and saved all three?
Belehouan, Jéan Leroy
Contract: End of 22-23 / Aged 21
U23PDL: Apps 14-6-2 Mins 1237 Gls 6 PLC: Apps 2-1-1 Mins 200 Gls 0
Notes: Defender. Loaned to Farsley Celtic.
He seems to have been around a while but had a number of injuries. Had spells at Halifax but got injured and it all seemed very stop start between the u23’s, them and the treatment table. Was out for almost a year through injury. Was given a new loan at Farsley Celtic towards the end of the season. Athletic defender who began at Manchester United. With his age, he may move in with the need to push others up the conveyor belt.
Boyes, Harry
Contract: End of 22-23 (contract activated) / Aged 20
Notes: Loaned out to Solihull Moors in the National League.
Boyes is another been with the club for a few years since he came from Man City. A couple of seasons ago, he was on loan in non-league and scored a good goal for Bradford Park Avenue but this was National League North level so a fair drop down the pyramid. Think he was a left wing back whenever I have seen him. He seems to have a nice left foot and gets up and down/suiting our system. He did get on the bench for the Newcastle game a few seasons ago. He came back to the u23’s for a while but then ended up at Solihull Moor in the National League this season. He by all accounts has done well there and also scored a few goals. Plays most weeks and has been a good experience no doubt. Given a contract extension or the option was activated I should say.
Broadbent, George
Contract: End of 22-23 / Aged 21
U23PDL: Apps 0-1-0 Mins 31 Gls 0
Notes: Loaned to Rochdale.
A 21-year-midfielder, Broadbent came to us from Manchester United and had been a regular in the u18/23’s for a few seasons. He had a spell on loan at Curzon Ashton last season and then even went to Beerschot but only played a few times but was probably a good experience for him. This season he was allowed to go to Rochdale but has struggled to hold down a first team slot and barely played at Spotland but did come back for the u23 playoff game. I thought his contract was up but it seems he has one mor year and you think as someone who turned 22 in September, he will soon move on. May have to go into non league to find regular football and see if he can work his way back up.
Brunt, Zak
Contract: To end of 22-23 / Age 20
U23PDL: Apps 5-1-0 Mins 468 Gls 3 PLC: Apps 2-0-0 Mins 180 Gls 0
Midfielder. See 1st team for notes. On loan at Southend and then Notts County
Cappello, Angelo
Contract: Pro until 21-22 / Aged 20
U23PDL: 15-0-0 Mins 1279 Gls 3 PLC: 7-0-0 Mins 644 Gls 1
Notes: Striker. Loaned to Blyth Spartans
Capped by Belize – a striker who likes to run at defenders. He has been involved with Belize in their recent World Cup qualifiers – but was maybe more well known for being part of the team being held up by armed gunmen in Haiti before one of the games a few seasons ago! He had scored 4 goals and 7 assists and played the third most games (behind Gomis and Brooks) before allowed to go out on loan. He always seemed to have an eye for goal and likes to cut in. He went on loan to Blyth Spartans in March till the end of the season. He was then on trial for Watford before being announced we had released him.
Dewhurst, Marcus
Contract: End of 22/23 / Aged 21
U23 PDL: Apps 4-0-4 Mins 360 Gls 0 PLC: Apps 2-0-0 Mins 180 Gls 0
Notes: Loaned to Boston United.
Dewhurst was seen as a really good prospect and had been involved in England Youth teams and was still involved for the England u20’s even last season. He has had a few loan spells at non league and at Carlisle but did not play much and came back to the u23’s but Amissah seemed to be getting more games as he had of course been playing when Dewhurst was out of the side. He ended up on loan at Boston who did well and got to the playoff final in their division upsetting some higher placed sides. He is out of contract this summer so remains to be seen if he will be offered anything. Another who has maybe not quite pushed on but hard as a keeper as only one number 1 even at lower league clubs of course.
Lopata, Kacper
Contract: Pro until 22-23 / Age 20
U23 PDL: Apps 6-0-0 Mins 540 Gls 0 PLC: Apps 1-0-0 Mins 90 Gls 0
Defender. See 1st team for notes
Maguire, Francis (Frankie)
Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Aged 18
U23PDL: 11-0-0 Mins 972 Gls 1 PLC: Apps 1-1-1 Mins 94 Gls 0
Notes: Midfielder
Born in Worksop he has been with United since he was 8 years old. A midfield player who gets up and down and has an eye for goal, he quickly moved into the u23’s and last season he ended up being around the first team and has made the squad and was on the bench for a handful of games. Good ball player who likes to take free kicks. This season he seems to have not maybe pushed on as much and others such as Arblaster seems to have moved ahead of him. Another who spent time at Bradford Park Avenue.
Neal, Harrison
Contract: Pro until 22-23 / Age 20
U23 PDL: Apps 4-0-0 Mins 360 Gls 0 PLC: Apps 1-0-0 Mins 90 Gls 0
Notes: Midfielder. Loaned to Southend
A 20-year-old midfielder, he had been around the u23’s for a while and had a spell on loan at Kettering to start this season. He had been captaining of the u18’s and I think even captained the u23’s for a period. This season he was a regular again and impressed with his box-to-box play, tackling and ball play. When Brunt was moved on to Notts Country from Southend, United gave them another young player in his place and Neal moved there. By all accounts he has done really well and it has been a good move for him. Heckingbottom praised him and I think said that his sides always win the 5-a-side when he plays which was a big compliment. Probably another he may need to get league experience to see if he steps up to that higher level but unsure of his contract situation – think he has one more year?
Seriki, Femi
Contract: Pro until 22-23 / Age 18
U23PDL: Apps 3-1-0 Mins 264 Gls 0 PLC: Apps 3-0-0 Mins 270 Gls 0
Defender. See 1st team for notes. Ended up on loan at Boston.
U23’s (may have played for 1st team/u18’s as well)
Ayari, Hassan
Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Aged 19
U23PDL: Apps 14-6-2 Mins 1237 Gls 6 PLC: Apps 2-1-1 Mins 200 Gls 0
Notes: Midfielder and Forward. Tunisian u20 international who was born in New York
Came from TW Braga who were fined more than £8,000 for failing to properly register Ayari when he was with them a few years ago. FIFA's discipline committee found TW Braga breached their regulations in relation to the 'registration of players and the protection of minors' when signing him. TW Braga insist they were told by local football authorities in Northern Ireland that it was fine because he was travelling on a European passport. He was registered on four separate occasions with three different clubs before joining Sheffield United. A few seasons ago, he helped Tunisia u20 qualify for the African u20 Cup of Nations and then finish fourth at the finals in Mauritania. He became known in the academy and u23’s for his superb free kicks and scored quite a few. Began the season in fine form and scored a number of spectacular goals. Technically very good but maybe needs to work on the other side of his game (defensive work/off the ball). He training with the first team towards the end of the season.
Buyabu, Jili
Contract: Pro until 23/24 / Aged 18
U23PDL: 7-3-2 Mins 712 Gls 0 PLC: 3-1-0 Mins 221 Gls 0
Notes: Midfielder
Formerly at Palace, he had trained with Chelsea and been linked with a few clubs as he played at Hornchurch this season. Forest and Peterborough were linked with him but United ‘won’ the race. He can play midfield or full back and has been used a wing back and has played in the u23’s and his appearances have increased as the season has gone on.
Brooks, Andre
Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Aged 18
Played the most minutes for the Blades in U23PDL. U23PDL: Apps 21-2-0 Mins 1848 Gls 3 PLC: Apps 6-0-0 MIns 551 Gls 0
Notes: Athletic wing back who can play further up the field.
He caught the eye last season in the u18 cup run and featured a fair bit for the u23’s too and this season he became a regular at the older level. Athletic player who has a fair bit of pace. Loves a celebration too with a like for the somersault/cartwheel! He has been used more in a forward or wide attacking position when I have seen him. He has been with United since he was 8. Another that maybe would benefit from some time in professional football in terms of a loan deal.
Cullinan, Harvey
Contract: Pro until 21/22 / Aged 19
U23PDL: 3-0-4 Mins 197 Gls 1 PLC: 1-0-0 Mins 90 Gls 0
Notes: Defender
He was given a pro deal from United after doing well in the Academy after signing from Newmarket Celtic in Ireland. Played a lot more last season but this season we did not see as much from him and after Xmas did not really feature for the u23’s. He then resurfaced on trial at Colchester in early April so you figured that United were happy for him to move on and giving him chance to find a new club.
Freckleton, Miguel
Contract: Pro until 23/24 / Aged 18
U23PDL:: 11-0-1 Mins 990 Gls 1 PLC: 2-0-1 Mins 210 Gls 0
Notes: Defender.
The Blades apparenly beat a number of sides including Southampton, Hull, and Cardiff City to sign Freckleton. He was with Mangotsfield United after leaving Bristol Rovers. Freckleton dropped out of the Rovers academy and went onto the South Gloucestershire and Stroud College football programme. There, under the guidance of former Leeds manager David Hockaday, Freckleton is said to have impressed and United stepped into sign the young defender. He has featured a fair bit in the u23’s and scored his first goal at Crewe in a 3-0 win.
Gaxha, Leonardo
Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Aged 20
U23PDL: 6-2-1 Mins 404 Gls 1 PLC: 1-0-0 Mins 78 Gls 0
Notes: Midfielder/Striker
Gaxha, who hails from Kerry in Ireland, seems to have been around the club for a long time now but missed a whole season due to a bad injury and has only really started playing again during this campaign. Could play for Ireland or Albania – indeed played for both at FA Youth level! He has abeen given another year I believe but will need to start playing regularly now as he is now 20.
Gomis, Nicksoen
Contract: Pro until end 23/24 / Aged 20
U23PDL: 20-0-0 Mins 1734 Gls 1 PLC: 7-0-0 Mins 660 Gls 0
Defender. See 1st team for notes
Gordon, Kyron
Contract: Pro until 22-23 – contract extension activated / Age 19
U23PDL: 14-0-0 Mins 1260 Gls 2 PLC: 3-0-0 Mins 270 Gls 2
Defender. See 1st team for notes
Grant, Karmal

From Arbourthorne and attended Springs Academy; Hackford grew up not far from Bramall Lane. It seemed for a few years this lad was talked up as being the next best thing off the conveyor belt and Wilder certainly saw the potential others did taking him on tour to Scotland with the senior squad last pre-season. He returned to the u18’s/u23’s but the fact he was playing even at the latter level at 16 said how much he was thought of. He ended up back around the first team and a combination of injuries and poor form meant he was on the bench for a few games and even came on once at Palace. He went back to the u23’s and even the u18’s, as Jebbison and Osula sort of overtook him and the last year we have not seen him play that many games or as many as we would like. We did send him on a loan to Alfreton Town but this was only for a month and he returned but then did not see him play much for the u18’s/u23’s. I presumed he was injured? Still very young but maybe not quite had the last 12 months he would have hoped after that early promise so faces a big season. Has a professional boxer brother, Anthony Tomlinson.

Striker. Came in from Arsenal on scholarship terms in early 2021. Scored a hat trick for the u18’s in only his second game and has been free scoring since arriving and was the leading scorer by the end of last season. Became the youngest player to start for the Blades u23 just a week after his 16th birthday in April 2021. He took this form into this season where he has scored lots of goals including multiple braces and hat tricks. He has been involved a fair bit for u23’s towards the end of the season and just carried on scoring. Seems a proper poachers striker. One to watch out for definitely.

Peck, like Lankshear, was surprisingly released by Arsenal as had been well thought of as he came through there but they did move on a number of players and United maybe took advantage. He had been on trial at Brighton and Cambridge as well as the Blades but chose to move to Shirecliffe. He impressed immediately with his classy ball skills and ability to take a free kick. He scored a fair few goals in the almost unbeatable academy side that dominated at the level they were at. Saw his great passing range in the Colchester playoff semi and scored a goal too. Watched him carefully in the final and was pivotal to most things. Seems to be a key man at u18’s and has had a taste in the u23’s where the club will hope he can become a regular next season.

Summary/Next season
United continue to be very successful at u18 and u16 level despite the facilities. We have players operating at higher age groups than they should be playing and we keep winning and have been very successful in both age groups. We need to be now competing with bigger clubs and need that move to better facilities and the higher academy category. Clearly there is some outstanding coaches and ethos in place. There are also some good players and we have seen a number doing well on loan at non league level. We now hope we can produce one or two to become regulars at first team level with the likes of Jebbison, Osula, Gordon, Arblaster, Seriki, Starbuck and Gomis all being involved and Gordon and Jebbison playing a fair few games too.
It is always hard when you come down and you have to make cut backs as you probably cannot keep as many pros. We will see a fair few move on this summer but that always happens as players need to be sacrificed to allow places for those to move up. We saw this with Smith, Slater etc and expect others although not as young in Dewhurst, Boyes, Broadbent to probably move on too. The next batch clearly have a lot of talent as we hammering teams most weeks at u18 level and it was a similar story at u23’s. I think some of the latter need loans now to create space for the u18’s to move up and the natural progression beneath that. It is always hard balancing a good side playing together and winning with letting a fair few go out for men’s football. We seem to have achieved a nice balance of doing this and producing some players that can come in and be around the first team. The next step is that production of the next Walker, Brooks, Calvert Lewin, Ramsdale, Maguire etc. Not easy!
---
SUFC Women’s team have been a bit up and down the last few years. About the time United hit our peak as the men’s team, you thought they may do the same but with only one promotion place it is difficult and there has been Man Utd and Liverpool at this level in recent years. They began the season well but then faded away before improving. They do seem to be well connected to the club and I often see some of the players at the men’s games. My wife has been to watch them a few times and says it is good, if different. Neil Redfearn has been the manager for a while now and always speaks well when I hear him. You worry if we can invest to get them up to the next level and be competitive when you see the likes of Man City and Chelsea who are at a completely different. A cynic in me believes if we did have to cut back in a few years that they may look at whether we can continue to fund them. I hope not but I have seen other clubs do the same with women’s teams, academies etc. As I say I hope it can continue to do ok and it is important that we have a side and feel for all the criticism the board and the Prince gets, this is a big thing we have got in place that we did not really have before.

U23PDL:: 11-0-1 Mins 990 Gls 1 PLC: 2-0-1 Mins 210 Gls 0

U23 PDL: Apps 6-2-3 Mins 594 Gls 0 PLC: Apps 2-1-0 Mins 181 Gls 0
Notes: Defence. Left the Blades during the January transfer window. He trialled with a number of other clubs before joining Millwall and playing against the Blades U23.

U18’s (may have played for u23’s as well)
There were 15 players in the U18 age group/Y13 education year, all of whom made development appearances for the Blades:
Anderson, Beau
Contract: 2nd year scholar / Aged 18
PLC: Apps 0-0-3 Mins 0 Gls 0 U18PDL: Apps 11-0-0 Mins 990 Gls 1 U18PDLC: Apps 3-0-0 Mins 270 Gls 0 FAYC: Apps 2-0-0 Mins 210 Gls 0
Notes: Defender
Left sided centre back who played for the u18’s before even becoming a scholar. He has been a regular again at this level but has suffered with a few injuries towards the end of the season and was recently announced as one we have released.
Angell, Thomas
Contract: 2nd year scholar / Aged 18
Played the most minutes for the Blades in U18PDL. U23PDL: App 0-2-6 Mins 12 Gls 0 PLC: Apps 0-0-2 Mins 0 Gls 0 U18PDL: Apps 24-0-1 Mins 2098 Gls 0 U18PDLC: Apps 3-0-0 Mins 270 Gls 0 FAYC: Apps 2-0-0 Mins 210 Gls 0

Left back who has been a regular at u18 level and shown he can defend and get forward. Diminutive in stature but has been given a pro deal.
Arblaster, Oliver
Contract: 22-23 / Aged 18
Made his international debut for England u18, started once and came off the bench once. Made the first team bench once. Spent some time on loan at Bradford (Park Avenue).

Bailey Green, Tyrese
Contract: 2nd year scholar / Aged 18
U18PDL 1-1-0 Mins 122 Gls 0
Notes: Forward.
Had his two year scholarship interrupted badly by a number of hamstring injuries and now has been released.
Barratt, Connor
Contract: 1st year scholar / Aged 17
U18PDL: Apps 6-1-5 Mins 524 Gls 0
Notes: Defender.
Signed from Birmingham earlier this season. Had to bide his time at the u18 level as they have been doing so well and the defence not conceding many goals.
Hackford, Antwoine
Contract: 22/23 Age 18
U23PDL: Apps 4-0-0 Mins 320 Gls 0 PLC: Apps 0-2-0 Mins 46 Gls 0 U18PDL: Apps 1-1-0 Mins 156 Gls 1 FAYC: Apps 1-0-0 Mins 62 Gls 0
Notes: Striker
Hampshaw, Henry

Notes: Goalkeeper
Trialled from Huddersfield Town before signing in January 2021. Split games with Hiddleston at U18 level as the keeper.
Hiddleston, Callum
Contract: 2nd year scholar / Aged 18
U23PDL: Apps 9-0-3 Mins 810 Gls 0 PLC: Apps 3-0-2 Mins 300 Gls 0 U18PDL: Apps 9-0-1 Mins 810 Gls 0 U18PDLC: Apps 2-0-0 Mins 180 Gls 0 FAYC: Apps 2-0-0 Mins 210 Gls 0
Notes: Goalkeeper
Goalkeeper that came to prominence after his penalty saves in the Youth Cup win over Millwall at Bramall Lane this season. Played his way into contention at u23 level and ended up starting more than the others and got into double figures in appearances at this level. Has been given a new deal.

Only just turned 17!
