Bit delayed as been in London all weekend a sore head after yesterday also! Apologies if a few spelling/typos – done on my phone on the train on the way back from London but even with spell check may be a few words that are mistyped! Sorry!
Tufty Club Pod to come but maybe tomorrow or Tuesday as I’ve only just got back and @webding has childcare commitments mixed with my work stuff. Will try and get something to you before the WBA game. Poor I know!

The Blades FA Cup adventure ended one step from the final as a classy Manchester City side dispatched them thanks to a Riyad Mahrez hat trick. United had stayed in the game until almost half time and indeed had created the best chance. However, Iliman Ndiaye's effort was saved and a naive piece of defending by his strike partner, Daniel Jebbison, gave City a penalty. Mahrez converted and more poor defending after the break saw City take the game away. The Blades battled hard but the Premier League Champions were too good in the end.
The Blades brought back stalwarts Fleck and Norwood for the ineligible McAtee and Doyle. They also opted to go with Jebbison up front in preference to Oli McBurnie. As expected Foderingham came in for Davies, after his suspension. City did not start with Ederson or De Bruyne but did field Haaland and a number of other established internationals including former Blade Kyle Walker.
The game began with the Blades fans in good voice in less seasonable weather than many from S2 have normally come to expect at Wembley this time of year!
It was almost a dream start for Heckingbottom’s men as United won an early corner in the first minute. Norwood’s delivery was met by Egan and fell perfectly for Ndiaye but his close-range finish was too close to Ortega who saved. United won their early tackles and were covering impressively picking up the loose balls. Jebbison flicked in for Ndiaye but his shot on the angle was well off target.
City started to dominate the ball with Silva, Gundogan, Mahrez and Grealish all so comfortable in possession. Alvarez and Haaland dovetailed up front and it was hard for United to know who to pick up. The Blades continued to work hard to deny ant clear chances but had a let off when the referee blew for an offence just before Haaland’s unerring finish from range. Baldock was doing well to limit Grealish down the City left side and United were keeping a solid and disciplined shape.
A Berge driving run saw a chance for United but Robinson’s effort lacked power and Ortega saved. City were moving United about but again solid defending from Egan and the Ahmedhodzic prevented them advancing dep into United territory.
Finally, the treble chasers had effort if note though as Mahrez curled wide and then Alvarez’s effort saw Foderingham push the ball away, getting enough on the ball to prevent any City man converting the rebound.
The minutes kept ticking away but disaster struck when a poor piece of defending cost the Blades a chance to go in level. The ball was miskicked by Silva and then Jebbison failed to clear. As the ball dropped, the striker clattered the City man from behind. He won the ball but took the man and the award seemed an easy one and VAR saw nothing to suggest an overrule could even be considered. MAHREZ took the penalty and sent Foderingham the wrong way. It was tough on United who had played well and limited a talented team to very few chances.
The half time whistle came but only after City had moved the ball about confidently and looked to try and create another.
The second half started and it seemed that goal had galvanised City and dented United confidence. Haaland fired over when well placed at the back stick after Gomez’s shot diverted off Robinson.
McBurnie came on for Jebbison but the game was effectively up for United on the hour mark though. Lowe was robbed in the middle of the park and MAHREZ took the ball on. No challenge came as both Egan and Robinson were twisting and turning but neither able to get to the Algerian. He slid the ball coolly past Foderingham for his, and City’s second goal.
It was not long after when he completed his hat trick. This was a well-made with less blame attached to any United players. Grealish transferred the ball inside and MAHREZ swept it home despite Foderingham getting a hand to the ball.
Sharp came on for Fleck and Foden and Palmer for Grealish and Haaland before the game restarted. City continued to look imperious as the Blades had barely had a kick, let alone get in the City half or threaten with any chances, since the break. Berge with one driving run was the only moment of excitement as City came close again with Mahrez once again threatening.
The changes continued with Phillips on for Gundogan and then United officially throwing up the white flag as key men and three of United’s better performers on the day, Berge, Baldock and Ahmedhodzic departed for Coulibaly, Bogle and Basham. The latter got a rousing reception as the Blades fans saluted their long serving cult icon.
Alvarez had an effort saved before Palmer shot was also close. Gomez then had an effort deflected wide. Bashan had a surging run but his theatrical fall drew more laughs than appeals from the Blades fans. There was 3 minutes additional time but it ended as most of the half had been played with City moving the ball around with total confidence.
On full time, former teammates and boyhood Blades fans, Sharp and Walker embraced and chatted whilst Norwegians Haaland and Berge did likewise. The United players saluted the near 30k who had supported their teams well even in a lost cause for the finals takes if the game and the fans reciprocated the applause. As the players departed, they did so to the sound of ‘The Blades are going up, the Blades are going up and now you’re going to believe us!’ Thoughts turn quickly to the league game against West Brom at the Lane on Wednesday night with a chance for promotion glory.
United – It was always going to be difficult when the draw paired us with City. Either of the other two and I do believe we’d have secretly fancied our chances of an upset (players and fans) but City are on a different level. They can rotate and change but still field outstanding talents and the system of playing and winning mentality is so ingrained.
I thought it would be a difficult afternoon and one where any team as fellow Championship side Burnley can attest to, can get a hammering. When City have easily seen off Liverpool, Arsenal and Bayern recently, you realise what you up against. Even with the players rotated somewhat, they are still asthenia Americans might say, ‘absolutely stacked.’
I had no issues with the line-up we picked. I’ve not seen anything that noteworthy to think Coulibaly would do any better than the experienced, if regressing, Fleck. Also, I felt McBurnie may be ineffective the way he played and the ball over the top, allied to Jebbison’s pace could be something that may give us some joy.
The first half an hour we were excellent, particularly off the ball. Of course, we got a superb chance and Ndiaye probably should score. I said at the time, we might not get a better chance (or indeed another chance!) and so it proved sadly. However, we were superb in terms of shape, organisation and knowing when to press and not press. The team moved across and denied them space in the final third. We rotated across and they helped each other, doubling up when they had to. We played it when we could although the front two maybe would have liked to keep it better, albeit with limited touches/service.
City slowly started to dominate and a few half chances arrived but other than the disallowed goal (how good was that finish from Haaland by the way?!), Wes only had that one saves to make. It was so annoying when Jebbisons reckless tackle effectively gifted them a goal. If we score that goal early and/or we get to HT without conceding, you think it’s going to be a real contest and suppose it was for 37 minutes but the goal is a real killer blow.
After the break, it’s the game probably most of us expected as City dominated and we barely get in their half. Our players tired and spaces start to open up. However, the second is another mistake, albeit ruthlessly exploited. Lowe loses the ball and they break and not sure why neither Robinson or Egan don’t go to the ball and Mahrez finished with class and composure.
McBurnie had come on for Jebbo at this point but we had no chance to try and get him into the game before the second goes in. The third is a better goal in terms of not necessarily being a mistake but was still a bit too easy.
After this we all scoreboard watched and kind of hoped time would just elapse without further damage. Fortunately, City slowed up and both teams’ kind of accepted the score as it was with changes aplenty. Both teams took off key men and it was great to see United legends Sharp and Basham get onto the Wembley pitch for the first time in their career before they call it a day.
The second half was just keep ball and we could not even get it for a small period of time. City moved it around with skill and accuracy and we just could not plug the gaps like we had. The likes of Baldock, Egan and Berge showed up well in their individual performances, which augers well for next season hopefully.
Most of the rest if the team worked hard but did not have the impact, we might have hoped albeit starved of the ball. It was disappointing to concede when we did and how – we did make silly mistakes – but we were probably always going to lose. Sounds defeatist but would most United fans have taken 3-0 before the game? Probably. Would have loved us to score and/or lead but that might have woken them up even more?! In the end it was a routine win at a canter but we can be proud of a superb cup run and our efforts, approach and game plan for most of the first half.
In the end, it was the one time we went to Wembley and probably knew we had very little to no chance so took the pressure off a bit. Now we turn our attention to Wednesday. The players will be tired chasing City around but West Brom played a day later and lost also. The crowd were great yesterday but we need the whole crowd to be up for it and surely, they will be with promotion at stake? Any side will seem so much easier after City but West Brom can hurt teams in their day and have threats like Swift and Wallace. We have had some scrappy wins and not been convincing despite doing what we have needed. Hope Wednesday we come out and everyone is ‘at it.’ Could be a glorious night in one of the most eventful weeks in the Blades history and that’s saying something as it is rarely dull being a Blade!
Players –
Foderingham 7/10 – Had little to do first half other than one push away where he did well and the defence protected him. The penalty he went the wrong way and is badly exposed on the second. I do think he could have done better with the third as it is not hit that hard and it was a soft hand. He makes a few decent saves after this although most you’d expect him to stop. He had probably less to do than we envisaged though maybe?
Baldock 8/10 – Along with Berge our best player. He was excellent. Restricted Grealish and showed what a good defensive full/wing back he is. Yes a few niggly fouls but he stuck to his task and never gave Grealish a moment. Played with real commitment and discipline. To be honest he was ok in the top flight last time and showed he will probably be the starter in this position again.
Egan 7.5/10 – Another who defended well and played in a resolute manner playing with his heart and his head. First half the defence kept together and moved across like they had to. He maybe could go across on the 2nd as could Robinson but hard with a quick player darting through. He restricted Haaland to few significant chances and only late on did they start winning balls coming into our box.
Robinson 7/10 – Usual all action display mixed with good and bad! He won a few tackles, read the game well and up for the battle. Had one shot at Ortega but this was comfortable. After the break, he struggled more with runners and gaps opened up. Looked like he was on skates as he was unable to get towards the ball or man and thought he looked poor here. Kept going but they got in down the sides as bodies tired late on.
Ahmedhodzic 7/10 – Did OK even if he barely advanced forward but you knew that would probably be the case. He defended well and made some interceptions, stepping in to stop a few attacks but second half it became attack v defence and they came at us in waves. Glad we took him off to not risk injury with big games to come.
Lowe 5/10 – Thought like the rest, he worked hard and first half he at least helped stop balls coming down that side but they rarely cross or go down the wings – often coming inside. At times he is still guilty if just kicking it and often conceded possession cheaply. However no huge errors until second half when he gets caught (he had been caught once first half but led to nothing) and they go and score. Yes, Mahrez has a lot to do after but you can’t make mistakes like that versus City. He kept plugging away but he is one of the sides that looks miles off being Premier League – indeed he has struggled post Xmas most weeks even in the Championship. Stands out as a real weak link currently but maybe harsh v such top players.
Norwood 6.5/10 – Thought first half he played well and kept it when he could but also covered a lot of ground and helped us keep a solid and disciplined shape in midfield. Decent corner for the chance too. Like the rest of the team, he dropped off and thought the few times he had it after the break he tossed it away too cheaply. They got through the middle a fair bit as we simply did not have the legs to keep up with them. Cynical yellow which worries me knowing he will face quick and athletic midfielders (not quite City’s level of course) at this level most weeks.
Fleck 6/10 – Like Norwood, though he began the game really well and was competitive with his tackles, ground coverage and tackling very good. He was nipping in and making those interceptions that stifled them getting any momentum. After they took the lead, our midfield just run out energy and they moved it side to side and picked us off easily. He did OK though and not the disaster many envisaged. I’m not sure Coulibaly has done enough to warrant the start really but some may disagree.
Berge 8/10 – Played well and along with Baldock, our man of the match. Worked hard, got stuck in and even won a few headers! Saw a few driving runs too (maybe he wanted to show up in front of his mate Haaland!). He looked good on the ball and our most dangerous attacking threat. Played ok last few games and took it up a notch in this game too.
Jebbison 5/10 – Had one flicked header but we did not really play the ball over the top like I thought we might, even though we did well first half and kept it when we could. Did not hold it up with the few chances he had to get involved but had to come back and defend a lot and often in our half. Sadly, he made a mess of being back with an air shot and then clumsy tackle – which sadly is a penalty even if he gets some of the ball. Did not see much of the ball either side of the half but was replaced not long after the break. His selection did not really work but easy to say in hindsight and without the error we go in 0-0 at half time. Will need to recover some two really poor individual moments in consecutive games at either end.
Ndiaye 7/10 – His mark is as much about his work ethic than his play on the ball. He had some flicks, tricks and moments but not much came off. His ball and touch did not always work and of course he missed a big early chance. 2nd half he barely had a kick and had to come deeper and deeper. Lived his work ethic as he kept running and chasing – constantly closing them down even as they moved it side to side.
Subs
McBurnie 6/10 – Hard as no sooner as he came on, we conceded so it was even more difficult then. May seem a bit controversial not starting him but he has looked leggy and ineffective in recent games. I can see why he thought Jebbo might work. He had a few bits of link play and then played one behind Berge.
Sharp 6/10 – Great to see him play at Wembley. Would have loved him to get a goal but not to be as he was another that just was living off scraps the time he was on. Clearly meant a lot to play for United at the famous stadium.
Basham 6/10 – As above. What a servant and legend. Just to see him play for United at Wembley seemed a fitting way to cap (hopefully with promotion) a tremendous 10 years at the Lane. Even had one Basham type run until he fell over!
Coulibaly 6.5/10 – A few progressive balls and he was neat and tidy with only one give away but the game had gone at this point. Not sure he’s the answer many seem to think. He looks OK but lacks fitness and tactical awareness. Maybe we need to see more of him but it’s promotion/cup football at the highest level and we can’t afford for a lad to learn on the fly I think those wanting him to play or just pointing at the lack of other options rather than him making a compelling case for selection.
Bogle 6/10 – Did not have much time really. Went back a few times and did not get in their half but then no one did really. Not sure he gets back in the side now unless Baldock gets injured so faces a big summer to keep super fit and regain his mojo/form.
Manager- Heckingbottom 7.5/10 – His tactics and shape worked perfectly first half and but for a moment of stupid defending, we would have gone in level. The organisation and structure without the ball was professional and underrated. We looked the same as we did v Spurs and tough to break down. They did little and created little despite dominating the ball. Once the goal goes in then you know that could be that and so it proved. He made a change but a mistake and its 2-0, then quickly 3-0 and then the game is done. Glad he rotated things (I’d have took Ndiaye off too personally) and saved a few from injuries/further fatigue and got club legends Sharp and Basham on the pitch. Seems up for the game Wednesday and hopefully the players can finish the job under the lights at the Lane.
City – Bloody hell they are a bit good, aren’t they? Rested a few but never miss a bear seemingly no matter who plays? We held them well but once the first goes in, they cruised it and think barely got out of first gear second half. All the players from keeper to centre forward are totally comfortable on the ball. No one panics and they just move it around so quickly but with a degree of patience weirdly within the speed. No player ever seems rushed. They are all athletes and all quick and all can carry the ball.
The way of moving the ball but also hunting in packs without it, is so ingrained in the side and the whole team trusts each other. 3-0 was about right in the end but they could and maybe should have had more. In the end they won easily after being frustrated for nearly a half and the treble is most definitely on. Probably the best club side in the world at the moment and a juggernaut really so no shame in the margin or manner if defeat. It’s almost too easy for them at times. Some may say it is boring as they rarely cross or even shoot from range but the pass, pass, pass approach I’m not sure I’d tire of watching! Especially when you win every bloody week.
Man of the Match – Mahrez. Not difficult. Three well taken goals and a constant threat with running and speed. Thought Walker was impressive and surely has a fair few years at City/top level despite some silly rumours linking him with a return to us. All the midfield seemed composed and available.
Weak link- None! Grealish and Haaland were restricted well by us and by Egan and Baldock particularly but the defence and keeper were not tested after minute one! Even Foden and Palmer are able to come on and carry on running at defenders. Frightening to play against.
Referee – Stuart Attwell. Fine even though a few fouls seemed soft. Think the penalty was right sadly and he was well placed. City seemed to get a lot of fouls but we fouled them a lot too! He also kept his cards in his pocket. Could have booked Baldock and Fleck before he booked Norwood – had no choice. He tried to let things flow and did keep his cards in his pocket. A few I felt he fell for the old Premier League star falls over but mostly he was ok.
Fans / Day out (weekend out actually!) – This was class and easily better than the game which we kind of knew how it might go. It really seemed a case of all Blades coming together all over London and then particularly around Wembley. It was family, friends and everyone coming together to celebrate being a Blade. With promotion a real probability, it just seemed one big party. Before and after people were smiling and you always bump into people you know or have not seen for years.
Despite the criticism (I’ll give some below!) Wembley still feels rather special to me. The walk down Wembley Way after you get off at Wembley Park and seeing all the Blades decked out in old kits is fantastic as is the crackle of noise as you walk down towards the stadium.
I still think Wembley is disorganised for a major event. Terribly long queues outside with no stewarding or organisation at all. Insufficient toilets seemingly inside (could not get in and waited all half time) and for refreshments. The access to get in and out takes too long and the views are rather mixed. We had an OK view, front of the top tier but still seems a long way from the pitch – maybe we should go lower down. The tickets are also ridiculously expensive. I can see why some opted not to go – for both sides due to the travel cost on top also.
The fans were loud and supportive early but the goal sort if flattened everyone and then it got away. City fans barely made a sound but you expect that against a lower-level side you know you should and then do beat. Credit the Blades for the singing and applause at the end and I think the fans really appreciated the reception they got even in a comfortable defeat.
In terms of our family, we were there for the whole weekend but day was great...We stayed at Wembley Premier Inn but as my wife went to a Record Store event at rough trade near Brick Lane, me and my son met Traveling Blade at O'Neils at 11am near Kings Cross.
We moved nearby to the Euston Flyer and met Blades Pod aka Ben and his brother. We spin were joined by Panchero aka Roy, Eggy and their friend Jay. A few other friends came as did Marc aka Webding, my partner on crime from Tufty Club, and his Dad. We saw Dem Blades David, Darren Smith aka the accountant and friend of Prince Abdullah, Pablo Glazier Hernandez and the famous YorkBlade (Hal from Sheff United Way) fresh from his Football Focus appearance. Quite a few of the Rainbow Blades there too including Katy, Eve and Jamie. Eve had possibly the greatest pair of trousers on I have ever seen (will discuss in too much detail on the pod). Quite a collection of Blades social media people who do various bits and bobs. We had some photos with most of us in old shirts (nearly all different too without being planned) and I’d spent too much time creating old player masks too. Might bring them out if we go up next week on London Road!
Great few hours and then we went to Wembley. Traveling Blade got on the train before all of us (think Gwyneth Paltrow in sliding doors) and it sailed off without us! We then caught up with him and all had a great singsong on the way before a quick beer near Wembley and then a ridiculous queue to get in with no organisation or system as above. Just a free for all. Took 30 mins to get in and we got there nearly an hour before ko. Saw loads of students from my School which was great too around the stadium and outside. Seeing all them with their Dad’s and families just reminded me of why I was there – with my own family.
After the game some of the above went to Box Park and it was good. Cheesy and a bit forced but good laugh with a live band and lots of Blades related songs. Got back to hotel around 10pm as all the fan park/posters had been changed to Brighton and Hove Albion.
Fantastic celebration of being a Blade as I’ve said. Just got back to Sheffield via Donny. Think team were on the train before us as saw pics of some of them with fans right where we were at Donny Station.
My son who is 15, said despite the loss it was one of the best weekends of his life. He loved being with all the above who found the right balance of taking the mickey but being kind to him and looking after him. So, thank you to all of them! It may have cost a lot of money; we may have lost there again but memories like that you cannot put a price on. Very proud to be a Blade and even despite losing not stopped smiling all weekend. Work for a few days but then hopefully another special night Wednesday and a celebratory few games to come after all being well if we finish the job.
Tufty Club Pod to come but maybe tomorrow or Tuesday as I’ve only just got back and @webding has childcare commitments mixed with my work stuff. Will try and get something to you before the WBA game. Poor I know!
