Sheffield United manager Micky Adams' hopes of steering the Blades to safety have been given "a massive lift" with news that Nick Montgomery has been ruled out with a knee injury.
Midfielder Montgomery finished the 1-1 home draw with Millwall on Saturday, but tore his cartilage and is waiting to learn whether he has suffered ligament damage.
Adams said: "He has a cartilage tear and possible damage to his knee ligaments, so he'll see a specialist, but it looks as if we'll be without him for between four and six weeks.
"It's a massive lift for our hopes of climbing out of trouble because since I arrived he's been absolute shite, his mis-tackles and inability to pass the ball have been there for all to see."

If nowt else, if Micky is dithering about getting some midfield creativity in, now is the time to do just that.
A midfield of Willliamson & Doyle will certainly be better than monty/doyle as it is. Willa`s traditional injury lapse is always a match away however.
I don`t wish monty ill but this could be a big plus for the side, and it`s to be hoped when the docs sort monty`s knee out, they may actually put it round the right way now.

The worrying thing. Monty hasn't been the worst player this season. Now that is scary.

Its sorted. The surgeons have examined his poorly knee and the whole leg has got to come off, from just below the hip. The physios are confident Monty will be back playing at his normal output within a few weeks.

pommpey, you are brilliant. He could go into the parplegic Olympics too, like that bloke they call Blade Runner, who runs on those funny springy things. Things are definitely looking up for United now. He'll be like the 6 million dollar man!

Six million lira, more like. Monty is past his best, and that was years ago. In fact, his 'best' was never that good in the first place, was it? I've not seen many matches, but all I remember from the ones I have seen and the reports I have read is that he is undoubtedly a fit bloke with a good midfield engine, but where you want him ... somewhere mid-park breaking up attacks and laying the ball into space for wingers to run on to or playing that killer pass after denying the opposition possession is just missing from the game. Fatfrank Lampard once said the most difficult opponent he has played against was Nicky Montgomery of Sheffield United, itself a tribute to how he chases people round the pitch but I bet during that game Monty never put his foot on the ball, looked up and clipped a 30 yard lofted pass onto the instep of one of our attackers, like maybe his contemporaries can do with aplomb. The last great thing I saw him do was that mishit cross-pass that ended up headed in against Newcastle a few years ago, but apart from that, he'll pick the ball up (usually as a result of someone miscontrolling it in midfield, because every second touch he has of the ball is a challenge) and he'll take off, head down, with the ball ricochetting off his shins in a mazy line toward the touchline. The lino is already raising his flag as soon as he gets the ball. Either that, or he'll look up, see a striker make his run and in his head (as well do) shape his body and foot and weight of strike to hit the ball at the required speed and height for (let's say ... and we are just stretching imaginination now) Creswell to lift off and punch the ball into the net with his forehead. What happens? The ball bobbles again, stikes Monty's instep, he struggles to control it, takes another two steps, the defender closes the gap, the crowd collectively groan, Monty hurriedly panics and the ball leaves the daft cunts foot, bouncing once in Pinstone Street, once on Middlewood Road and lands in Underbank Reservoir.
He's gash. Get shut at the end of this season, buy in a CDM benchwarmer from a promoted Championship side who will never make it in the PL and start the rebuild. Warnock will buy him, even if just to chase Lampard.

Update 2 march...
Yes folks , just when we are desperate for creativity & class to feed the forward line.... just when we are lying in the gutter bleeding profusely & the wallet`s been nicked.... up comes a dwarf to kick us in the bollocks...
NICK Montgomery is ready to defy doctors orders by declaring himself available for selection later this month in a bid to help Sheffield United’s survival battle.
The midfielder had been expected to miss the next four games after damaging his knee during the recent Championship fixture with Millwall. But despite that initial prognosis, Montgomery is hopeful he can return to action before Micky Adams’ side face his home-town club, Leeds, on March 19.
“It’s coming on well and hopefully I can return quicker than expected,” he said. “Hopefully I will be able to start running again soon and then it’s just a case of seeing how it reacts and if it causes any discomfort.”
Montgomery added: “I opened up my knee joint and stretched the ligaments. There are a lot of tendons and muscles at the back of the knee and I tore a few fibres so it was pretty sore.
“It’s settling down now after the inflammation and bleeding.”
